Our trash and recycling day is normally Tuesdays, but please read the schedule below to see how the city handles holidays and amnesty weeks.
Crews begin collecting at 7:00 am. We recommend that trash be set out on Tuesday mornings to reduce littering that results when animals get into trash bags overnight. The city picks up two bags per week per eligible household without tags. If you have more than two bags, you will need to purchase a trash tag for each additional bag. Note: There is a limit of two free bags and 10 tagged bags each week. Trash tags cost $2.50 each at designated Westlake Ace Hardware and Price Chopper locations.
Recyclables are picked up at the curb on the same day as our weekly trash pickup. Currently, the city recommends you use a recycling bin from participating Westlake Hardware or Price Chopper stores. Bins are $9 each, and more than one may be used. You may set extra recyclables in cardboard boxes or plastic tubs "clearly labeled as recycle" next to the bin. Note: The city announced on its website that new, rolling recycling bins will be distributed to homeowners free of charge by the end of summer.
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE AND NO-TAG WEEKS
If a holiday falls during the week, trash and recycling collection takes place on the day following the holiday, and collection for the remaining days of the week also takes place one day later than usual. Friday trash is collected on Saturday during such weeks. This one-day push is called the holiday schedule.
Additionally, during winter weather, recycling and trash operations might be suspended. Under the City's stronger snow policy, KCMO suspends collection during big storms to make those drivers available for snow plowing. If this is the case, the holiday schedule goes into effect. Watch this page for notices or check kcmo.gov/snow.
No-tag ("trash amnesty") weeks happen twice a year and on special occasions. During those weeks, residents can put out up to 12 bags curbside without any additional tags as long as each bag weighs less than 40 pounds. Regular trash rules apply. No hazardous waste, bulky items or leaf and brush will be collected.
No collection occurs on the following 2024 holidays:
